Why won't my video play on Adobe After Effects CS4?

-My Canon Rebel T2i shoots in MOV format. I imported it into AE CS4 but then i realized that format doesnt work in it. So i converted the video to AVI and when i imported it into Cs4 it played but the template where you're supposed to see the video is all black. No visual. What should i do?
