How can I copy a section of a DVD so I can put it on Windows Movie Maker?

-I am trying to copy sections of a Movie so I can put it on Window's Movie Maker. I need a Free and LEGAL way of doing this. As far as I'm aware as long as you have payed for the Movie and it's not a pirate copy it's LEGAL to copy it. I tried to copy some TV shows of Itunes but it wouldn't let me copy. Then I tried a DVD and there was no copy option on the DVD Either. I know you can copy on my computer because I looked on you tube and right clicked and it said Copy from this section.
